Victoria University

Located in the heart of Toronto and federated with the University of Toronto, Victoria University offers students membership in a community of scholars distinguished by their intellectual accomplishments and social commitment. International linkages, research institutes, conferences, unique first-year programs and generous scholarship programs, combined with opportunities to work and volunteer, make Victoria an enriching experience for students of all backgrounds.

Victoria University consists of two colleges. Emmanuel College is a theological college offering graduate studies and is part of the Toronto School of Theology. Victoria College is one of the seven undergraduate colleges for students in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto.

Victoria is particularly proud of its integration of modern technology into the graceful architecture of the dwellings and academic buildings on campus.

Victoria offers Vic One, a distinctive program for first-year students that takes a multidisciplinary approach to learning in small seminars. The program focuses on six areas of study: humanities (Northrop Frye Stream), social sciences (Lester B. Pearson Stream), arts (Norman Jewison Stream), life sciences (Augusta Stowe-Gullen Stream), physical and mathematical sciences (Arthur Schawlow Stream), and education (Egerton Ryerson Stream). Enrolment is limited to 25 students in each seminar section. Undergraduate programs in literary studies, Renaissance studies, material culture and semiotics and communication theory are also offered.

A concurrent education program in primary school teaching is offered in conjunction with OISE/University of Toronto. In addition, Victoria undergraduates have full access to courses and programs offered by the Faculty of Arts and Science, University of Toronto. Victoria University, through Emmanuel, its theological college, conducts research on topics related to religion, values and ethics. Preparation of individuals to go into communities and churches across the country is part of the mission. At Victoria College, an arts and science college, most research is carried out by professors whose appointments are in a department in the University of Toronto. In the first-year offerings of the college, emphasis is placed on developing students’ research skills through small-class experiences. Researchers and students find that the college’s library and the library system of the University of Toronto offer unparalleled resources to facilitate scholarship.
