Algoma University is a thriving undergraduate university located in the scenic, lively city of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, at the heart of the Great Lakes along the Canada-U.S. border.
Algoma
University offers more than 30 undergraduate degree program options and
emphasizes a balance of teaching and research priorities to optimize
interaction between faculty and students. Algoma University strives to be a
university of international distinction, enriching generations of diverse
cultures and communities.
At
Algoma, students will never be in a class of more than 65, even in first year.
Algoma’s interactive learning environment serves a community of over 1,400
students, including nearly 15 percent Anishinaabe (First Nation, Inuit and
Métis) and almost 18 percent international students. In addition to the 17:1
student-to-faculty ratio, students benefit from undergraduate research
opportunities, student advocacy groups, opportunities for cooperative
education, a recreation centre, multiple student housing options and
international exchange programs. Students enjoy all of this while being a part
of a learning community that provides every student with an opportunity to be a
leader and to experience success.
With
its growth in recent years, the university has embraced capital expansion,
including the construction of a new student residence (2012) and the Essar
Convergence (2011). The Downtown Student Centre was opened in the fall of 2010,
which includes an upper-year residence and the University Medical Clinic.
At Algoma,
sharing knowledge carries with it the responsibility to advance that knowledge.
Since Algoma has no graduate programs, students have access to research
opportunities as undergraduates. Algoma’s faculty commitment to research and
innovation spans the breadth of inquiry, from the microscopic (e.g., genetic
diversity of baculoviruses) to the macroscopic (e.g., cultural impact of
indigenous self-governance). Partnerships with world-class scientific research
institutes, community-based and First Nations organizations help fortify the
impact of this research on the region, the country and our world. The impact of
this research, within the discipline and the communities in which we live, is
both meaningful and important.
Algoma
University is affiliated with research institutes such as NORDIK Research
Institute, Invasive Species Research Institute, Health Informatics Institute
and Algoma Games for Health. This invaluable experience earns its students the
problem-solving and decision-making skills and knowledge to succeed in the
workforce to advance their studies.
